10 most searched-for gadgets this Christmas (MSN Tech and Gadgets)
Every year has its superstar gadget gifts: the mobile phones, portable entertainment devices and bits of gaming hardware that make it onto Christmas lists across the country. This year, analysis by online trends watcher Hitwise has found the top ten most searched-for gadgets in the run-up to Christmas.
If you have yet to get started on your festive shopping - whether online or off - and you had planned on buying any of these popular gadgets as presents, you would be well-advised to grab them while you can...
10. Nintendo DS
Though it was originally released over three years ago, Nintendo's handheld console is still a bestselling Christmas gift.
Notoriously difficult to track down on the high street last Christmas, this year the Nintendo DS still makes it into the top ten of the?gadgets most searched-for by online shoppers.
9. iPod nano
Not only is the iPod nano the ninth most searched-for gadget in the run-up to Christmas, but eBay reports that "iPod" is currently also the most popular search term on its site.
Announced in September, the fourth generation of this iPod model is available in a new, wider "nano-chromatic" colour range and contains an accelerometer that enables users to shuffle songs by shaking the device.
8. iPod touch
Slightly more popular than even the iPod nano, Apple's iPod touch is the eighth most popular search for online shoppers in the run-up to Christmas.
With WiFi connectivity that allows it to hook up to the iTunes store and the same kind of multi-touch interface as seen on the iPhone, Apple's touchscreen MP3 player is available with either 8, 16 or 32GB of storage.
7. Xbox 360
Xbox recently announced that November was its biggest ever sales month in
6. Sony PlayStation 3
The Sony PlayStation 3 beat its rival console, the Xbox 360,?to sixth place in the most-searched-for stakes.
In 2008, Sony announced the release of a new 160GB model of the PS3, as well as the upgrading of the 40GB version 80GB - ensuring this games console with Blu-ray player a place on even more Christmas lists.
5. iPod
Online trend watcher Hitwise reports that four fifths of all searches by online shoppers hunting for MP3 player are specifically for those in the Apple iPod product family.
Little surprise, then, that the iPod classic - the latest incarnation of the player that started it all - is the fifth most popular search for online shoppers.
4. Nokia N96
The multimedia N95 smartphone was a hit for Nokia, and this Christmas its recently-released follow-up - the darker, curvier N96 - is set to do even better.
The fourth most searched-for gadget among online Christmas shoppers, the do-everything Nokia N96 has 16GB on onboard memory, HSDPA data speeds, a five-megapixel camera, GPS and more.
3. iPhone
According to Hitwise, the iPhone accounted for 6% of all online searches by Christmas shoppers looking for mobile phones, making it the third most popular gadget overall.
Between the popularity of this and the iPod MP3 players, Apple is the most searched-for consumer electronics brand overall in the run-up to Christmas.
2. Nintendo Wii
The bestselling Wii console is the second most popular gadget among online seasonal shoppers, with "Wii" and "Nintendo Wii" currently the two most popular searches within eBay.
Come New Year, it seems like there won't be a household left in the country without Nintendo's games machine in their living room…
1. Wii Fit
Top of the list of popular gadgets being searched for in the run-up to Christmas is Wii Fit, the Nintendo fitness game that comes with the pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board.
When counted as a game rather than a gadget, Wii Fit also tops the chart of most searched-for games, being the subject of nearly 17% of total online shopping searches for game titles.
